Skating and hockey

Develop your skills and practice with a variety of skating and hockey drop-in programs to suit your schedule.

A CSA-approved hockey helmet is strongly recommended for most programs. All participants must wear ice skates while on the ice.

Fun Skate

For ages 3 years and older. Have a great time on the ice skating with your family and friends. A CSA-approved hockey helmet is strongly recommended. Approved skating aids are permitted.

Figure Skating Shinny

Practice your spins, jumps, and figure skating programs. You must be a competent forward and backward skater and be able to turn comfortably from forward and backward with speed to attend this program.

Adult and Older Adult Skate

For ages 18 years and older. Have a great time on the ice skating with other adults. A CSA-approved hockey helmet is strongly recommended. Approved skating aids are permitted.

Adult Cardio Skate

A supervised fast-paced skate session using the entire ice surface incorporating skating skill drills with music. You must be a competent forward and backward skater and be able to turn comfortably from forward and backward with speed to attend this program. A definite workout!

Hockey Shinny

Pick-up hockey is a non-contact game where full hockey equipment is mandatory for all program participants including CSA-approved hockey helmets. Facial protection/cage is required for some age groups. Equipment rentals are not available and goalies are not provided. Goalies (in full equipment) are permitted to play for free.

Program age groups include:

  • 14-17 years
  • 18+ Sledge (sledges available upon request)
  • 18+ adult
  • 55+
  • 65+
  • Women’s hockey

Hockey Stick & Puck

Work on basic stick/puck handling and skating skills. Maximum 3 children for each adult. Full hockey equipment is mandatory for some age groups. A CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory. This program does not allow scrimmage, shinny, or game play.

Program age groups include:

  • Ages 3-13 with an adult
  • Ages 18+

Learn the basics of skating on ice or improve your skating skills.

Group lessons are offered for most ages and ability levels.

Leather hockey skates or figure skates with laces are recommended. If a helmet is required, it must be a CSA-approved hockey helmet. Plastic skates or those with straps, buckles, or adjustable to different sizes are not recommended.

Ages 3 to 5

  • Children learn basic ice skating skills
  • Some classes may require an adult to skate with the child on the ice

Ages 6 to 12 (Junior Program)

  • Beginners learn basics like forward skating, backward skating, and stopping
  • Experienced skaters can improve their skills and learn crossovers and turns.
  • Group sizes of 4 or 10 are available

Intermediate Skating Program

  • A program for participants that have completed the 6-12 (Junior program) and want to learn more advanced skills such as backward crossovers, C turns, and edges

Ages 13 to 17

  • Beginners or experienced skaters can progress at their own pace
  • Learn forward skating, backward skating, stopping, turning, and crossovers
  • A CSA-approved helmet is required for all skaters that cannot skate forward and stop competently

Ages 18 and up

  • Learn skills like forward and backward skating, turns, stopping and more
  • A CSA-approved helmet is required for all skaters that cannot skate forward and stop competently
  • Adapted Programs for Children and Adults
  • A program for participants with special needs that provides adapted methods of teaching suitable for the participants
  • Each participant must provide a support person that is able to skate and attend the lesson with the participant
  • All participants and support persons must wear and CSA-approved hockey helmet

Important information and reminders

Ages 3-5 with adult, Ages 4-5 years

  • CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory for all adults and children on the ice
  • Skaters in these programs are not evaluated
  • New skaters – avoid wearing slippery pants and bulky snowsuits

Ages 6-12 (Junior)

  • CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory for all participants
  • Skaters are evaluated and receive a progress card at the end of the session
  • Returning skaters please bring your progress card back at the start of each session

Intermediate Skating

  • Skaters in this program are not required to wear a helmet but it is strongly recommended
  • Skaters are evaluated and receive a progress card at the end of the session
  • Returning skaters please bring your progress card back at the start of each session

Ages 13-17

  • CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory if you cannot stop competently
  • Participants have the option to be evaluated and receive a progress card in this program

Ages 18+

  • CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory if you cannot stop competently
  • Participants are not evaluated in this program
  • Wrist guards are strongly recommended

Adapted Programs

  • Are available for participants ages 6 to adult that require accommodation to learn the basic skating skills
  • Each participant must provide their own support person, that is able to skate, to come on the ice with them and participate in their lesson
  • CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory for all participants and support persons

Skates

  • Are usually one half to one full size smaller than your shoe size
  • Leather skates with laces are strongly recommended
  • If possible, avoid plastic skates with buckles and straps and skates that are adjustable to fit several sizes
  • Skates must be sharpened before use
  • Tie skates tightly so they fit snugly around your foot and support your ankle

Clothing

  • Dress warmly in layers
  • Jackets should be hip length. Avoid wearing long coats and scarves.
  • Bring mittens/gloves
  • New skaters avoid wearing slippery pants and bulky snowsuits
  • Respect skate patrol and staff at all times.
  • Individuals displaying unacceptable behaviour may be asked to leave the program.
  • All programs are non-contact; gameplay, scrimmages, and hockey equipment/toys are not permitted.
  • Food & beverages are not permitted on the ice.
  • Only ice skates are permitted on the ice at all times.
  • Only approved skating aids are permitted on the ice (wheelchairs, EZ gliders).
  • Skate in the approved direction.
  • Do not carry children.
  • CSA-approved hockey helmet is strongly recommended for all ages.

During the winter, the rink is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting.
