Help make trick-or-treating accessible and inclusive for everyone

Over 400,000 children in Canada identify as having one or more disabilities that may prevent them from enjoying trick-or-treating.

You can help to remove barriers for children with disabilities in our community by supporting the Treat Accessibility initiative. Here are some tips:

  • Provide barrier-free access: make sure to place your trick-or-treating station at a location that is easily accessible to all. For example, clear your driveway and pathways of any obstacles and make sure it is well lit.
  • Create a safe environment: if you are planning to decorate your trick-or-treating station, front yard or other visible areas of your home, make sure that you are creating decorations that can be enjoyed by all. For example, refrain from the using strobe lights and high-pitched, sudden loud noises which may be alarming for some children.
  • Everyone is different: various disabilities can affect how someone interacts with others. Practice patience and understanding to ensure that trick-or-treaters feel comfortable and welcome.

For more information about this initiative, visit the Treat Accessibility website.
