Ready for growth and development: City preparing to finalize Official Plan

Proposed updates will help bring more housing to Mississauga

City building | December 3, 2024

Mississauga is preparing to finalize its new Official Plan – an important planning document that helps shape the future of our city. From housing and transportation to the environment and economy, the Official Plan guides how Mississauga will grow and develop over the next 25 years.

Recent updates to the Official Plan include policies to help encourage more housing and new mixed-use communities. The updated plan also addresses new planning-related legislation from the province.

As the City prepares to finalize the Official Plan, there will be several opportunities for members of the public to learn more and share final comments on the draft.

Opportunities for feedback

The City welcomes input on the draft Official Plan:

  • On December 9, City staff will provide an update to Planning and Development Committee – and interested members of the public – on proposed changes to the Official Plan. Many of the changes stem from public feedback received earlier this year.
  • In January, City staff will hold a virtual public meeting to provide an overview of the draft Official Plan, highlight key changes and take input. The draft Official Plan will be posted online in advance of the meeting – and comments are welcome anytime.

Following these meetings, staff will incorporate any additional feedback and bring a final draft of the new Official Plan to Council for adoption in Spring 2025.

Background

Every 10 years, the City reviews and updates the Official Plan to ensure it reflects Mississauga’s changing needs and provincial direction. Public input has played an important part in shaping the policies that make up the new Official Plan, including:

  • Where housing, industry, offices and shops should go
  • Which services and amenities such as parks, schools, roads, trails and transit are needed
  • How we protect the city’s culture, heritage and environment
  • How the city should grow and what growth will look like

The new Official Plan will come into effect once it is adopted by City Council and approved by the Province of Ontario.
