Mississauga City Council adopted the following motions at its November 27, 2024 meeting. Watch the November 27 Council meeting.

Mississauga City Council approves 2025 Budget amendments

Mississauga City Council approved amendments to the proposed 2025 Budget. The amendments to the proposed 2025 Budget, initially approved during Budget Committee meetings on November 18, 19, and 25, will result in an additional operating tax levy requirement of $10.6 million and a revised operating budget increase of 8.8 per cent. With the Council amendments, the 2025 Budget reflects a 3.3 per cent increase on the City’s share of the total tax bill.

Under Strong Mayors Powers legislation in Ontario, the municipal budget process follows a specific timeline and procedure. While City Council can vote to approve amendments to the budget, they do not vote to approve the budget. Rather, the budget is deemed adopted after a passage of time.

Council approved Budget Committee report recommendations that had budget impacts, including:

  1. Citywide Windrow Removal
  2. Secondary Sidewalk Clearing
  3. Enhanced Snow Removal for Bike Lanes
  4. Flood Resilience Rebate Program

Mississauga City Council supports Disability Without Poverty initiative

Mississauga City Council unanimously passed a resolution to support the Disability Without Poverty initiative. This resolution includes direction to send a letter to the Prime Minister and party leaders, advocating for actions based on the second annual disability poverty report card. This initiative aligns with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, emphasizing the City’s commitment to addressing disability and poverty simultaneously.

Key points of the resolution

  1. The City is asking the federal and provincial governments to support the Disability Without Poverty initiative, in solidarity with Mississauga.
  2. A call for improvements to social assistance programs to better support individuals with disabilities.
  3. A request for greater investments in accessible, affordable, and supportive housing for persons with disabilities.

Review of Fireworks By-law

Mississauga City Council passed a motion requesting a staff report on the Fireworks By-law to assess the effectiveness of current regulations and explore potential improvements for the future.

  1. Review the 2023 Fireworks Report, focusing on regulations for home fireworks use during five approved holidays and their year-over-year effectiveness.
  2. Analyze costs for City Enforcement staff and explore potential procedural changes.
  3. Gather feedback from commercial location proprietors on incidents, staffing costs, and site cleanup.

Extension of exemption periods for portable and sidewalk signs (notice of motion)

Mississauga City Council received a notice of motion for a future meeting to extend the period during which businesses can erect portable signs and to extend the period that permits. Business Improvement Area (BIA) boards to erect sidewalk signs inside existing planters located on City Boulevard to December 31, 2026. This motion aims to support local businesses and provide continued flexibility for businesses and BIA boards in their signage practices.

Key points of the motion

  1. The allowance for erecting portable signs has been extended to December 31, 2026.
  2. BIA boards are permitted to erect sidewalk signs inside existing planters on City Boulevard until December 31, 2026.
