Start the new year off right: Celebrate safely this New Year’s Eve

When ringing in 2025, remember to keep fire safety and fireworks safety in mind.

City services | December 19, 2024

As we welcome 2025, the City of Mississauga is reminding residents to prioritize safety and be a good neighbour so that celebrations are safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Fireworks

Eager to celebrate the start of the new year with fireworks and thousands of your closest friends? The City of Mississauga’s New Year’s Eve 2025 event at Mississauga Celebration Square will include fireworks, a live concert, food trucks, skating and more.

Celebrating at home instead? As per the City’s Fireworks By-law, fireworks are allowed at home on your private property from dusk on Tuesday, December 31, 2024 until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1, 2025. To use fireworks on a public street or park, you must have a permit from the City. The expectation is that individuals adhere to the Fireworks By-law and are respectful of their neighbours.

To dispose of used or unused fireworks, completely submerge the fireworks in water and soak them overnight. Wrap the soaked fireworks in a plastic bag to keep them from drying out and dispose of them in your garbage bin.

To submit a complaint about illegal use of fireworks, visit mississauga.ca/fireworks or call 311. Please do not call 911 for fireworks complaints.

Fire safety

Having friends and family over to celebrate? If you plan to cook, remember to stay safe:

  • If you must leave the kitchen, make sure hot appliances are turned off.
  • Keep towels and clothes away from the stovetop.
  • Never cook or barbecue in your garage.
  • Avoid cooking while under the influence of alcohol or cannabis. Consider ordering food.
  • Do not bring portable gas-fuelled cooking appliances into your home for use.
  • Be careful when frying and cooking with oil. Hot oil can easily catch fire. Use a thermostat-controlled deep-fat fryer that will make sure the fat does not get too hot.

On-street parking

Will guests be staying the night? A temporary parking permit from the City allows you to park on a residential street for longer than the standard five hours and during the prohibited period between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Remember to follow all road signs and parking signs.

On-street parking on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day is allowed beyond the five-hour limit between 8 a.m. and midnight. Remember, temporary parking permits can be suspended or cancelled at any time during a snow event so crews can safely clear the roads.

During your New Year’s Eve celebrations, remember to be a good neighbour. Be kind to each other, and please be respectful of City staff working hard to ensure your celebrations stay safe.
