Fly the Maple Leaf proudly! Mississauga celebrates National Flag of Canada Day with pride and unity

Local government | February 13, 2025

February 15, 2025 holds special significance as it marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic red and white maple leaf flag — a symbol of Canada’s national identity and our values as a people.

Mississauga’s celebration of this milestone will include a red and white Civic Centre clock tower lighting and a projection of the historic flag on the south exterior of City Hall on the evening of February 15. Residents are encouraged to show their Canadian pride by displaying flags at their homes. Recently, five former Canadian Prime Ministers united to ask Canadians to do the same.

The Canadian flag was first raised on February 15, 1965, and over the past six decades, it has become an enduring emblem of the country’s values and a national symbol of unity. It represents the true north strong and free. The annual celebration of Flag Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have defended our country and upheld Canada’s principles while fostering a deep sense of national pride among citizens.

Mississauga’s role in Canada’s growth and success

Mississauga has been instrumental in Canada’s economic and cultural landscape, making substantial contributions through its infrastructure, multiculturalism and business sector.

  • Economic powerhouse: Home to Canada’s largest & busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Mississauga serves as a crucial hub for trade and commerce. The city also hosts over 75+ Fortune 500 companies, cementing its status as an economic leader.
  • Multiculturalism and diversity: With a population exceeding 750,000 and Mississauga is one of the most diverse cities in Canada with over 60% of residents identifying as visible minority. Mississauga embodies Canada’s commitment to multiculturalism and inclusion.
  • Historical and cultural significance: The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation played a key role in shaping early Canadian history through treaties that influenced the country’s development. As Canada’s festival city, Mississauga welcomes people from all over Canada and around the world to its many cultural festivals. In many ways, Mississauga is a true representation of Canada.

Choose Canada

In recent weeks, Canada has faced the evolving threat of tariffs on Canadian products and services entering the United States (U.S.) market. The U.S. announced plans to implement a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel imports from all countries starting March 12 with talks of other tariffs following.

In response, Canadian governments at all levels, including the City of Mississauga, are encouraging everyone to come together and put Canada first. Buying Canadian, where possible and supporting local businesses keeps our country strong and united against these external threats.
