The City’s crossing guard program helps school children from kindergarten to fifth grade cross the road. The program is available to all public and private elementary schools in Mississauga.
As part of the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan, Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee evaluates new locations for school crossing guards with support from the City and School Board staff.
If you’re concerned about the safety of school children crossing the road at a specific location, you can request a site inspection or safety review. The site inspection will determine whether a crossing guard should be positioned at the location. The safety review will determine if alternative safety measures can be implemented to improve safety.
During a site inspection and/or safety review, members of Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee (MSTSAC) and City and School Board staff will visit the area to determine if a crossing guard is needed or if alternative measures can be implemented to improve safety for students. Reviewers will look at the conditions around the site in the 30 minute period before school begins and after school ends and also make overall safety recommendations.
If you want to schedule a crossing guard site inspection and/or a safety review, contact the Crossing Guard Supervisor, Sheelagh Duffin on 905-896-5167 or email sheelagh.duffin@mississauga.ca.

When a crossing guard is present, drivers must come to a full stop at school crossings and remained stopped to allow all pedestrians to cross the road safely. If you do not stop completely and remain stopped for people crossing at a school crossing, you can be fined up to $1,000 and issued four demerit points on your driver’s license.
Fines double in Community Safety Zones near schools and public areas, which are clearly marked with signs.
