On October 24, 2022, first-time electoral candidate, Martin Reid, was voted as Ward 9 Councillor in the City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel. A lifelong resident of Meadowvale, Martin has dedicated the last two decades and countless hours of volunteer service to Ward 9. His experience and first-hand knowledge of the Ward inspires him to make Ward 9 a better place for everyone.
In 1977, Martin’s parents moved to Meadowvale to raise their family. He attended local public schools Settler’s Green, Edenwood Middle School, Meadowvale Secondary School and graduated from Waterloo University with a degree in Social Work. Martin later received his Masters of Divinity in Marriage and Family Counselling from Tyndale University.
In addition to being a Frontline Worker for the Toronto Salvation Army, Martin was also the Housing Coordinator for The Dam, a youth drop in centre in Meadowvale, before starting his Wellness business. Social Services and community building has always been Martin’s passion and focus.
In 2020, Martin served as one of the twelve members of Mayor Crombie’s Black Caucus. For two years, The Black Caucus advised the City of Mississauga on diminishing systemic barriers to promote greater well-being within Black communities and throughout the City of Mississauga. During his time on the Black Caucus, Martin recognized the importance of representation in order to make the changes needed to better the community and city.
“I approached retiring Councillor Pat Saito to prepare me for the position of Ward 9 Councillor. Pat was a patient mentor who taught me the value of taking swift action, the enjoyment of supporting residents, the importance of amplifying the non-profit institution’s vision within the community and the ongoing need for connecting neighbours to one another. Support, Amplify and Connect has become my mission for the role of Ward 9 Councillor.”
On New Year’s Eve, only a few months into his role as Councillor and in the Acting Mayor capacity, Martin hosted 20,000 Mississauga residents while ringing in 2023 at the City of Mississauga’s Celebration Square. He joined local Ward 9 business owners of Mindshare to celebrate their 5th Anniversary and welcomed Design TWG to the Ward during their Grand Opening Ceremony. In recognition of his 2 decades of volunteer service, MP Iqra Khalid presented Martin with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pin.
An avid user of Mississauga’s MiWay Transit, Martin presented a Motion at his first Mississauga Budget committee and gained the support of his Council colleagues to pass a one-year pilot project for $1.00 all-day transit fare for seniors and zero fares for kids 12 years and under. This is an impressive feat for a first time Councillor. Martin is excited to hit the ground running and make his first term of Council both memorable and successful.
Martin has been married to his wife, Alexandra since 2017 and is the proud father of two sons and two step-children.
