The City partners with the Province of Ontario on matters under provincial jurisdiction that impact our local community.

Mississauga asks the province

The City supports the provincial government in programs that grow the local economy and help create jobs.

Mississauga continues to face significant financial pressures due to the lingering affects of the pandemic, inflation, global conflicts and supply shortages.

As part of the Province of Ontario’s 2024 budget consultation process, we are requesting continued funding support to address the ongoing impacts of housing affordability, climate change, traffic and congestion, growth on city services, operating budgets, and other city building initiatives.

To make sure Mississauga continues to provide quality services, we are also seeking funding support and collaboration for the City’s top priorities and initiatives:

  • Work with Mississauga and other municipalities to understand the full cost of the Bill 23 changes and fully compensate cities for the financial losses incurred
  • Increase funding for housing infrastructure needed to meet the province’s housing targets, and measure municipalities on units approved, not housing starts
  • Amend the Planning Act requirement regarding notices in print newspapers to reflect the realities of the decline of the print news industry in Ontario
  • Create new funding formula that fairly supports the building of twenty-first century cities
  • Upload the costs of operating the Hazel McCallion Line (Hurontario light rail train) to the province
  • Speed up the hiring of Justices of the Peace to support Mississauga’s provincial offence court
  • Consult with the City of Mississauga to create a fair and equitable agreement that treats Mississauga’s resident and business taxpayers with respect before they make any decisions on the Greater Toronto Airport Authority’s payment in lieu of taxes formula
  • Move forward to expedite the reintroduction of a fully funded Downtown Loop to connect downtown Mississauga to the Hazel McCallion light rail train (LRT), helping Mississauga to be a truly transit-oriented city
  • Match the funding of the federal government and bring all-day, two-way service to the Milton GO line
  • Fund the detailed design for the Pearson Airport connection to facilitate planning, design and construction efficiencies with the current Eglinton Crosstown West Extension LRT project
  • Fund the implementation of Downtown Mobility Hub and Transitway Connection
  • Fund the Transit Project Assessment Process to plan for the next phase of the project westward
  • Provide financial support to fund the construction of a zero-emission transit garage estimated at $500 million
  • Provide provincial funding to offset the cost premium of zero-emission buses
  • Provide support for ready-to-deploy fuelling infrastructure technologies
  • Create a separate fund for hydrogen technologies in transportation
  • Fund incentives and programs for adoption of district energy and low-carbon technologies for buildings
  • Provide funding to support the tourism industry’s continued recovery, and policies and programs to address the ongoing labour shortage
