Loyalist Creek Erosion Control Project – Behind Thorn Lodge Drive

The City is undertaking a Schedule B Class Environmental Assessment Study for erosion control and restoration of Loyalist Creek behind Thorn Lodge Drive. This section of Loyalist Creek has been impacted by recent large storm events and is in need of rehabilitation to address existing erosion and safety issues.

Project overview

Loyalist Creek extends roughly 600 m through Thorn Lodge Park on the south side of Thorn Lodge Drive. The creek ultimately discharges to the Credit River near Mississauga Road. Within the study area reach, the creek is channelized and its banks are lined with stone-filled gabion baskets and multi-tier layers of armour stone. The reach also contains a number of armour stone and gabion basket drop structures along the bed of the channel. In several locations the gabion baskets are broken and sections of the banks are beginning to fall into the creek, posing a significant safety risk.

The City has identified this reach of Loyalist Creek as a high priority site in need of rehabilitation.

Project objectives

The main goal of this project is to mitigate the existing erosion problems and ensure long-term stability of the creek while also protecting or enhancing the existing environmental resources within the study area.

Benefits

Rehabilitation of the creek will improve the stability and environmental health of the watercourse, improve fish habitat and fish passage, maintain or improve the hydraulic capacity of the creek, and protect nearby properties and infrastructure.

Online Public Information Centre

A Public Information Centre (PIC) presents information related to the study and allows an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to provide input. The PIC for this project has been moved online for public health and safety purposes related to COVID-19.
