Emergency management

Most emergencies in Mississauga are handled by first responders like police, the fire service and paramedics. However, the City’s Office of Emergency Management helps coordinate emergency response efforts for larger emergencies such as floods, extreme weather, train derailments, and pandemics.

These are some of the top hazards that impact the City:

These types of emergencies threaten our city by negatively impacting public safety, public health, environment, critical infrastructure, property and economic stability.

The Emergency Management team helps create plans for potential hazards so we can take charge in the event of an emergency, and ensure Mississauga residents are prepared and safe.

How the City prepares for an emergency

The City’s Emergency Plan is used to make sure we’re prepared for these types of emergencies. This plan sets the out roles and responsibilities of City Council and employees when responding to an emergency or disaster.

The Emergency Plan is reviewed annually to reflect changes in the community and organization. The Office of Emergency Management conducts training and exercises in collaboration with City’s partners, to make sure City employees and all stakeholders involved in an emergency are prepared.

The City meets the compliance requirements stated by the legislation to keep  Mississauga and its residents safe. Visit Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act and Ontario Regulation 380/04 to learn more about compliance regulations.
