In progress City project

Transit support vehicles

With funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), MiWay will be replacing eight transit support vehicles from the City’s non-revenue transit fleet with zero-emission electric vehicles.

Background information

As per the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) guidelines, ICIP is a federal infrastructure program designed to create long-term economic growth, build inclusive, sustainable and resilient communities and support a low-carbon economy.

Through ICIP, the federal government is providing $11.8 billion in federal infrastructure funding to cost-share projects under four streams, one of which is the Public Transit stream.

The Public Transit stream of ICIP will primarily build new urban transit networks and service extensions that will transform the way that Canadians live, move and work.

This includes the procurement of eight zero-emission battery electric vehicles to replace existing transit support vehicles within the City’s non-revenue transit fleet.

Benefits

With the recent announcement of ICIP funding for this project, MiWay will be able to replace some existing vehicles to avoid risks of delayed service and/or service cancellations, decreased reliability, and inability to respond to emergency situations.

Electric vehicles will also improve population health for the residents of Mississauga compared to gas-powered transit support vehicles.
