Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services Awarded Critical Lifesaving Upgrade From Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) has been named a 2021 grant recipient by Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada^®. Mississauga is safer than ever thanks to the Foundation providing important funding in the amount of $11,000. The grant will be used to purchase combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for MFES and will ensure our community is safer and better prepared for emergencies.

“We know the last year has been very challenging for some of our residents, which is why we’re working with partners across the city, like Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada, to try and make it easier to get more working smoke alarms in the homes of residents who need it most,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “On behalf of the City of Mississauga, we thank Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada and all the generous donors who help us improve the safety in multi-residential buildings in our city.”

With the funding provided by Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada, MFES is partnering with The Mississauga Food Bank to distribute 500 smoke alarms to food bank users who do not currently have a working fire alarm.

“We’re so thankful for the support from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada and our local Firehouse Subs restaurant in Mississauga,” said Deryn Rizzi, Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management, Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services. “The combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarms will help us respond more quickly to fires as every second counts in emergency situations and can be the difference between life and death. Last year, approximately 41 per cent of the fires we responded to in high rise buildings did not have a working smoke alarm. We remind all residents to regularly check their alarms to make sure they work.”

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada has awarded 228 grants to public safety organizations since 2015. This grant is one of 11 Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada awarded to public safety organizations during the most recent grant cycle. The 11 grants will provide critical lifesaving equipment valued at more than $277,000 across Ontario.

“The Mississauga Food Bank is excited to partner with MFES and Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada to help distribute 500 smoke alarms to neighbours across our city,” said Meghan Nicholls, Chief Executive Officer, The Mississauga Food Bank. “Through engaging with our network of over 50 agencies across Mississauga, plus distributing units through our Food Bank 2 Home delivery program, we’ll be able to get these smoke alarms into the right hands to help keep our most vulnerable safe.”
