COVID-19 | October 20, 2021
Following implementation of an employee and volunteer vaccination policy, the City of Mississauga is reporting that 90 per cent of active employees have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. With declarations still being collected from a small number of employee groups that have not had the opportunity to disclose their status yet, that number is expected to fluctuate.
“More than half of the City of Mississauga employees have been on the front lines of COVID-19 delivering essential services to the community,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “It is remarkable that City of Mississauga employee vaccination rates are trending higher than our community vaccination rates and I am hopeful that when all the data is in, the number will be on par with the Region of Peel’s two-dose coverage in our community.”
The process of disclosing vaccination status requires an employee to show their vaccination certificate in-person to their supervisor or manager. Due to the differing schedules between some staff and supervisors, the City of Mississauga will continue to collect disclosure information.
Employees who did not disclose or remain unvaccinated by choice have completed a mandatory education session on the benefits of being vaccinated and will participate in regular rapid antigen testing, at their cost, beginning November 1.
“Throughout the pandemic, employee health and safety has been at the forefront of all of our decisions at the City of Mississauga,” said Paul Mitcham, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer. “We thank all of our employees for their cooperation with this new policy. We will continue to adapt policies and procedures to align with the current public health measures.”
The City of Mississauga received minimal exemption requests from employees, which are being handled on a case-by-case basis.
