City Seeks Feedback on System of Publicly Available Bikes, e-Bikes and e-Scooters

Curious about e-Scooter, e-Bike and bike sharing services? Do you want to share your thoughts? Join the City of Mississauga for an online community meeting to learn more and provide feedback on introducing a system of publicly available bikes, electric pedal-assist bikes and/or electric kick-style scooters in our city.

The online community meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. This is your chance to learn more about how various shared micro-mobility systems work, ask questions and share feedback on the system you feel would best fit Mississauga’s needs.

You can also share feedback through an online survey until Friday, March 25.

Bikes, electric pedal-assist bikes and electric kick-style scooters are referred to as micro-mobility devices and are transportation alternatives to vehicles. They are lightweight, low-emission and help connect residents and commuters to their destinations. Currently, shared micro-mobility systems are not permitted to operate in Mississauga.

Feedback collected from the online community meeting and the survey will help inform the best way to introduce a shared micro-mobility system in Mississauga. A recommendation will be brought to Council later this year.

• Individuals who own and operate an e-Scooter in Mississauga
• Cyclists who use Mississauga’s cycling infrastructure (e.g. multi-use trails, bike lanes)
• Pedestrians who use multi-use trails in Mississauga
• Drivers and commuters
• Community groups, organizations, businesses and anyone interested in micro-mobility and shared micro-mobility systems

Background
In February 2021, the City of Mississauga updated its Parks By-law, Transit By-law and Traffic By-law as part of an Interim e-Scooter Strategy to regulate where personally-owned e-Scooters could be operated in Mississauga. Currently, personally-owned e-Scooters can be operated on public roadways with a posted speed limit of 50 km/h or less and on cycling infrastructure, including bike lanes and multi-use trails along roadways.

The purpose of the Interim e-Scooter Strategy was to get feedback from the community on the use of e-Scooters in the city, and for City staff to use this feedback to help inform whether a shared micro-mobility system should become part of Mississauga’s transportation system in the future. The City’s Transportation Master Plan recommends that a shared system of bikes, e-Bikes or e-Scooters be created in Mississauga.
