In progress City project

Aquitaine Avenue Road Safety Improvement Pilot Project

The City is aiming to increase the comfort, accessibility and safety for all road users along Aquitaine Avenue, from Tenth Line West to Millcreek Drive.

Overview

The pilot project has changed Aquitaine Avenue from four lanes to three lanes. This traffic calming measure will help increase the comfort, accessibility and safety for all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. It will also help reduce speeding on the roadway by narrowing the road and help keep traffic at a slower speed.

As part of the pilot, on-road protected bike lanes, dedicated vehicle parking lanes, and dedicated centre or left-turn lanes have been added on various sections of Aquitaine Avenue.

The pilot project is scheduled to end in December 2024. The road will be reconfigured back to four lanes as early as January 2025, weather-permitting.

Status

The installation of the pilot road reconfiguration is complete. The City will be monitoring road operations throughout 2024 to inform a permanent future road reconstruction. Residents and road users can give feedback through the contact information on this page and future public information sessions.

Public engagement

The City will host an in-person public information session in fall 2024 to update residents on the status of this project and future permanent alternatives.

On May 30, 2024, the City held a public information session. Display boards from that event can be found in project documents.

In March and April 2024, City staff hosted four pop-up information booths where residents could ask questions about the project and give feedback.

Three public online information sessions were previously held on the following dates:

  • May 1, 2021
  • May 2, 2021
  • May 16, 2023

The City continues to welcome feedback from residents and Aquitaine Avenue road users throughout the pilot project.
