Overview
The pilot project has changed Aquitaine Avenue from four lanes to three. This traffic calming measure will help increase comfort, accessibility and safety for all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. It will also help reduce speeding by narrowing the road to keep traffic slower.
As part of the pilot, on-road protected bike lanes, dedicated vehicle parking lanes and dedicated centre or left-turn lanes were added along different sections of Aquitaine Avenue.
Status
The installation of the pilot road reconfiguration is complete. The City will be monitoring road operations throughout 2024 and into early 2025 to inform a permanent road reconstruction.
Reconfiguration of the roadway back to two general traffic lanes each direction (four lanes in total) and removal of the bike lanes and centre-turn lanes is scheduled for the spring of 2025, after the next public meeting.

Public engagement
A public meeting is planned for the first quarter of 2025 to look at the future of Aquitaine Avenue. It will be part of a larger meeting to look at permanent cycling infrastructure on three corridors: Aquitaine Avenue, Argentia Road (east of Winston Churchill Boulevard to Turner Valley Road) and Millcreek Drive.
In this meeting, staff will present:
- Results of the data collection conducted on Aquitaine Avenue
- Preferred alternatives for permanent cycling infrastructure on all three corridors

Past engagement
On May 30, 2024, the City held a public information session. Display boards from that event can be found in project documents.
In March and April 2024, City staff hosted four pop-up information booths where residents could ask questions about the project and give feedback.

The City continues to welcome feedback from residents and Aquitaine Avenue road users throughout the pilot project.
