What is micro-mobility

Micro-mobility refers to small, lightweight transportation vehicles that are often powered by electricity or physical effort. Examples include bicycles, e-bikes and e-scooters.

Vehicles allowed in Mississauga

You are allowed to ride the following vehicles, but only in the areas specified for each vehicle.

E-scooter/electric kick-style scooter

E-scooters and electric kick-style scooters are powered by electric motors and don’t require manually kicking.

You can ride them on city roads with a speed limit posting of 50 km/h and in designated cycling areas, such as cycle tracks and multi-use paths.

To operate an electric kick-style scooter, you must meet all Ontario’s kick-style scooters requirements.

Pedal-assisted e-bike (pedelec)

Pedal-assisted e-bikes are bicycles with electric motors that assist with pedaling.

You can ride them on all city roads and designated cycling areas, such as cycle tracks and multi-use paths.

To operate a throttle-assisted e-bike, you must meet all Ontario’s e-bike requirements.

Power or throttle-assisted e-bike (bicycle style)

Power or throttle-assisted e-bikes are bicycles with electric motors with that allow users to operate without pedaling.

You can ride them on all city roads and designated cycling areas, such as cycle tracks and multi-use paths.

To operate a throttle-assisted e-bike, you must meet all Ontario’s e-bike requirements.

Power or throttle assisted e-bike (moped style)

Power or throttle-assisted e-bikes in moped style are electric bicycles that allow users to operate without pedaling.

You can ride them on all city roads and designated cycling areas, such as cycle tracks and multi-use paths.

To operate a moped style e-bike, you must meet all Ontario’s e-bike requirements.

Motor-assisted bicycle/moped (gas powered)

Motor-assisted bicycles or mopeds powered by gas have small engines that allow users to move fast without pedaling.

You can ride them on all city roads.

To operate a motor-assisted bicycle or moped, you must meet all Ontario’s motorcycle requirements, which includes having a motorcycle licence.

Limited-speed motorcycle (electric or gas-powered)

Limited-speed motorcycles are small motorcycles that have engines powered by electricity or gas. They operate at lower speeds than traditional, full-sized motorcycles.

You can ride them on all city roads.

To operate a low-speed motorcycle, you must meet all Ontario’s motorcycle requirements, which includes having a valid motorcycle licence.

 

Vehicles not allowed in Mississauga

You are not allowed to ride the following vehicles on public roads, sidewalks and trails.

Cargo e-bike/cargo-assisted bicycle

Low-speed vehicle

Low-speed vehicles are motor vehicles designed to travel shorter distances at lower speeds. They are typically used in residential areas, campus settings or gated communities. Golf cart

Urban mobility vehicle

Urban mobility vehicles are small, compact, three-wheeled vehicles usually with one built-in seat. They are powered by electricity and slow-moving. Electric skateboard, hoverboard and unicycle

Electric skateboards, hoverboards and unicycles two-wheeled or single-wheeled micro-mobility vehicles with platforms where users stand. They are equipped with battery-operated electric motors that help move users forward. Currently, they are not provincially regulated.

Rent e-bikes and e-scooters

E-bike and e-scooter rentals are available through the City’s shared micromobility program. You can borrow and ride them for a fee (set by each operator) and return them at designated areas. You may ride the rental vehicles only in areas they are permitted.
