About the artwork

Gala Gateway functions as a symbolic gateway and frames the view of Zonta Meadows Linear Park. Gala Gateway invites the public to touch its materials and safely occupy the space around the stones. It creates a dialogue with time, both spiritually and physically, through changes that will appear on the stones over the years.

Gala Gateway is a companion artwork to Gala Procession. Both are permanent public art sculptures that trace inspiration from the natural elements of Canada and the dynamism of performing arts. The artworks create tension through their materials: rough and smooth, hard and soft, heavy and light.

About the artists

Harley Valentine is a Toronto-based sculptor who specializes in large, outdoor biomorphic metal sculptures, often drawing upon mythology and history for inspiration, as well as natural forms and objects. Self-taught, he surfaced on the Toronto art scene at the age of 26, and his works have been exhibited and displayed in public spaces across Canada. 

Gabriel Fain is a licensed Architect with the Ontario Association of Architects. He graduated from the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto with a Master of Architecture degree where he was awarded the prestigious Heather M. Reisman Gold Medal in Design. Gabriel is a frequent guest critic at the Daniels Faculty and a regular contributor to Canadian Architect Magazine.
