Angling for Something New? Try Fishing in Mississauga

Mississauga is Ontario’s third-largest city and home to nearly 800,000 residents. But did you know it is also home to great places where you can fish?

In fact, there are 75 types of fish in the Credit River, which winds its way through Mississauga down to Lake Ontario. Pumpkinseed, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Chinook and Coho Salmon and Rainbow Trout (also called Steelhead, which is incidentally the name of Mississauga’s Junior Hockey Team), are commonly found.

This is a great time of the year to try fishing. From June 29 to July 7, no fishing licence is required during Family Fishing Week.

Try out one of these spots as recommended by Credit Valley Conservation:

1. Meadowvale Conservation Area offers fishing, three picnic areas, one comfort station, barbecues and open spaces for play with a nature trail. Parking available. [map]

2. Streetsville Memorial Park is a great place to wade into the river and try your hand at fly fishing. An ideal spot for Rainbow Trout during the spring. Parking available. [map]

3. Riverwood is one of Mississauga’s hidden gems. Located in central Mississauga and nestled along the east bank of the Credit River, Riverwood provides exceptional access to some ideal and picturesque fishing spots. Parking available. [map]

4. Lake Aquitaine by Meadowvale Community Centre is an excellent spot for young anglers. It has abundant Panfish and Bass (both Smallmouth and Largemouth). This is also the location for Family Fishing Day, being held on June 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The lake is best accessed from the Meadowvale Community Centre on Glen Erin Drive. 5. Erindale Park is famous for its year-round open season for migratory Trout and Salmon (peaking in September and October). Smallmouth Bass fishing is also good into the summer. Ample parking is found in Erindale Park off Dundas Street. [map]
