Colourful banners on display to celebrate Mississauga’s 50th anniversary!

New celebratory series of vibrant artwork is popping up across the city

City services | August 29, 2024

In celebration of Mississauga’s 50th anniversary and local artists, the City of Mississauga is proud to showcase new public art banners that have been co-commissioned with Mississauga’s five Business Improvement Associations (BIAs), each representing a different area of Mississauga.

Produced by artist Alyah Holmes, The City in Colour banners captures the vibrant, diversity of Mississauga’s communities and focuses on bringing people, nature and the feeling of Mississauga to life.

Located in Applewood, Churchill Meadows, City Centre, Clarkson, Cooksville, Erin Mills, Erindale, Malton, Meadowvale, Port Credit and Streetsville, each banner evokes a memory and tells a different story.

Holmes drew on her personal experience as a Mississauga-based artist when designing these banners. Her local pride is displayed through the illustrative details such as: Clarkson Halloween, Rattray Marsh, Taste of Cooksville, the historic Clair House (Canada’s first winery, which was located in Cooksville), transportation in Malton, Port Credit’s music and waterfront patios, Streetsville Bread & Honey Festival, Franklin House, summer food trucks at Celebration Square, Wahoosh Falls and more.

Each year, the City’s public art program commissions emerging artists to create original banner artwork and participate in a public art mentorship opportunity.

“It’s incredible to be part of such amazing artistic talent within the city and be able to visually share what makes Mississauga special to me. I hope the people of Mississauga feel I’ve captured the city and what makes it so special.” – Alyah Holmes, Artist
