Council appoints Ward 4 Councillor John Kovac as second Deputy Mayor

Kovac will serve as second Deputy Mayor for the remainder of the 2022-2026 term of Council.

Mississauga City Council has approved a motion initiated by Mayor Carolyn Parrish to appoint Ward 4 Councillor John Kovac as the City’s second Deputy Mayor for the remainder of the 2022-2026 term of Council.

As the Councillor representing nearly 80,000 residents in the Ward 4 City Centre area, Councillor Kovac has been appointed as second Deputy Mayor to support the Mayor with the City’s ambitious agenda for City Centre, including the expansion of the Living Arts Centre, a possible hotel/conference centre, the revitalization of City Hall and a possible sports stadium.

The Deputy Mayor role was introduced as a new role for Mississauga City Council in June 2024, at which time Ward 8 Councillor Matt Mahoney was appointed to the role, in accordance with the Ontario Municipal Act.The Deputy Mayor supports the Mayor and serves as the acting mayor at functions or activities at her discretion, including, but not limited to, official City events, intergovernmental and third-party meetings.

Kovac was first elected as Ward 4 Councillor in 2015 and is now in his third term. He was the past Chair of the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Ad-Hoc Committee and Vice-Chair of the City’s Public Vehicle Advisory Committee. He is currently the Vice-Chair of General Committee and a member of several City boards and committees including Planning & Development Committee, Budget Committee, Transit Advisory Committee, Road Safety Committee, Mississauga School Traffic Safety Action Committee, and the Mississauga Library Board.
