Council Outcomes April 7, 2021: Library Lending Agreement, Vision Zero Task Force & Mobile Vaccination Units

 This week, Mississauga City Council approved a lending agreement with the London Public Library, a request for a province-wide Vision Zero Strategy Task Force and a motion for mobile vaccination units.

“In an effort to promote a more targeted approach to vaccine rollout, Council approved a motion to support the Region of Peel’s mobile vaccination units to go into high infection workplace sites to vaccinate essential workers and include those employed in schools, transit workers, and other essential workers regardless of age. We also approved a lending agreement with the London Public Library to expand our digital library resources for our residents. Throughout the pandemic, the City of Mississauga Library has continued to provide a key service by keeping residents engaged online and meeting their educational, cultural and recreational needs,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “Finally, we are requesting our provincial partners convene a provincewide advisory task force on Vision Zero. Mississauga is committed to Vision Zero in our City and we continue to make Mississauga roads safer for everyone by lowering speed limits and installing traffic calming measures to address speeding among other measures. We need all levels of government working together to align efforts.”

Library Lending Agreement

Council approved the City to enter into an agreement between Mississauga Library and the London Public Library to share access to eBooks and eAudiobooks through Libby by Overdrive. The library has existing agreements with both the Burlington and Hamilton Public Libraries and saw an increase of 48 per cent in eBook and eAudiobooks use in 2020. Council also authorized Mississauga Library to enter into similar agreements with other libraries as opportunities arise.

In addition, the library, together with the Information Technology division, will expand the existing Laptop and Hotspot Lending Program to introduce a pilot of 100 Chromebook laptops that will be available for loan at the library’s 18 locations by the end of June 2021. Vision Zero Stakeholder Task Force

Council approved that the Mayor, on behalf of Mississauga City Council, send a follow up letter to the province and local members of parliament to request that the Minister of Transportation and the Associate Minister of Transportation reconsider the request to convene a stakeholder task force group to advise the provincial government on how a Vision Zero Strategy can be developed and implemented throughout Ontario.

The motion was raised by Ward 9 Councillor Pat Saito.

Mobile Vaccination Units

Council approved a motion to support the Region of Peel’s mobile vaccination units to go into high infection workplace sites (including schools, transit and other essential sites exposed to multiple human contacts) in Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga to vaccinate workers wanting to be vaccinated, regardless of age.

The motion was raised by Ward 5 Councillor Carolyn Parrish.

Vaccination Program Update
