Mississauga City Council approved the following notices of motion and motions at its January 29 meeting.

Mayor’s Housing Task Force addresses housing affordability crisis

City Council approved a motion from the Mayor to implement significant measures aimed at increasing housing supply and affordability in Mississauga, including substantial reductions in development charges and other financial incentives for new residential construction.

Key points of the motion:

  1. Reduce City residential development charges by 50 per cent for all residential developments with building permits issued before November 13, 2026.
  2. Offer a 100 per cent reduction in City residential development charges for 3-bedroom units in purpose-built rental apartment developments with permits issued before November 13, 2026.
  3. Defer collection of City residential development charges until the first occupancy permit is issued for qualifying developments.
  4. Request the Region of Peel to implement a new purpose-built rental housing tax subclass that will reduce property taxes by up to 35% for 35 years for new purpose-built rental housing developments
  5. This motion be forwarded to the Region of Peel for their consideration of matching incentives relating to development charges, where applicable.

Increased support for Metamorphosis Network advertising campaign

Council approved a Notice of Motion allowing additional funding and advertising spaces to support the Metamorphosis Network’s campaign to raise awareness about provincial underfunding of municipal and social services in Peel Region.

Key points of the Notice of Motion:

  1. Increase advertising spaces from 101 to 233 for a 4-week campaign period.
  2. Allocate up to $100,000 in additional funding from the Fiscal Stability Reserve.
  3. Address the disparity in provincial funding for Peel Region residents compared to other Ontario municipalities.

Changes to Credit Valley Conservation Committee representation

Council approved a Notice of Motion to accept the resignation of Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney from the Credit Valley Conservation Committee and appoint Councillor Brad Butt as his replacement.

Key points of the motion:

  1. Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney’s resignation from the Credit Valley Conservation Committee is effective immediately.
  2. Councillor Brad Butt is appointed to the Credit Valley Conservation Committee.
  3. The appointment term ends either upon the dissolution of the Committee or at the end of the Council Term on November 14, 2026, whichever comes first.

Changes to Cooksville Business Improvement Area board of management

City Council approved changes to the membership of the Board of Management for the Cooksville Business Improvement Area (BIA), as notified by the Cooksville BIA in accordance with the Cooksville Business Improvement Area Governance By-law.

Key points of the motion:

  1. Removal of Shakeel Alam from the Board of Management, effective April 3, 2023.
  2. Removal of David Cook from the Board of Management, effective September 30, 2024.
  3. Appointment of Antonia (Toni) Velianou to the Board of Management, effective October 27, 2024.
