From fire safety to fireworks, celebrate safely this Lunar New Year

To ensure your celebrations are safe and enjoyable for everyone, follow these safety reminders.

City services | January 23, 2025

As Lunar New Year approaches on Wednesday, January 29, families across Mississauga are getting ready to welcome the Year of the Snake with food, fireworks, decorations, music, lanterns, gifts and more.

As one of the largest celebrations for Chinese, Korean and Southeast Asian communities around the world, families and friends will gather for Lunar New Year to give thanks for the blessings of the year, exchange gifts and celebrate the arrival of the new year.

To ensure your celebrations are safe and enjoyable for everyone, follow these safety reminders.

Fireworks

Celebrating with fireworks? As per the City’s Fireworks By-law, fireworks for Lunar New Year are allowed at home, on your private property, on Wednesday, January 29 from dusk until 11 p.m. To use fireworks on a public street or in a park, you must have a permit from the City.

To dispose of used or unused fireworks, completely submerge the fireworks in water and soak them overnight. Wrap the soaked fireworks in a plastic bag to keep them from drying out and dispose of them in your garbage bin.

To submit a complaint about illegal use of fireworks, visit mississauga.ca/fireworks or call 311. Please do not call 911 for fireworks complaints.

Fire safety in the kitchen

Lunar New Year brings families together. If you plan to cook, remember to stay safe:

  • Keep items that can burn away from the stovetop.
  • Never cook or barbecue in your garage.
  • Do not bring portable gas-fuelled cooking appliances into your home for use.
  • Be careful when frying and cooking with oil. Hot oil can easily catch fire. Use a thermostat-controlled deep-fat fryer that will make sure the fat does not get too hot.

Lights and decorations

Keep fire safety in mind when setting up and enjoying your decorations:

  • If you’re planning to use candles, remember to keep them in a sturdy holder on a heat-resistant surface.
  • Do not leave candles unattended.
  • Keep flames a safe distance from curtains, lanterns, furniture, decorations and loose clothing.
  • Keep children and pets away from all sources of heat and flames.

Visit Mississauga’s fire prevention page for more tips on how to prevent a fire.

Having guests over?

Will guests be staying awhile or spending the night? A temporary parking permit from the City allows you to park on a residential street for longer than the standard five hours and during the prohibited period between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Remember to follow all road signs and parking signs.

Remember, temporary parking permits can be suspended or cancelled at any time during a snow event so crews can safely clear the roads.

Happy Lunar New Year! Enjoy and celebrate safely.
