Help your kids create new connections through sports, activities and programs

As summer comes to a close and fall starts, now is an excellent time to encourage your children to explore new interests.

Entertainment and activities | August 13, 2024

The City of Mississauga offers several programs, camps, day programs, and various sports and other activities tailored for children. Participating in activities, sports and enriching programs is an easy way for your children to build new relationships and develop social skills. With so many choices, you’re sure to find an ideal program, activity, or sport that matches your child’s age, abilities and interests.

Benefits of extracurricular activities

Engaging in sports, music, and art provides children with social, mental, and physical benefits. This helps them understand structure and explore different areas to develop a passion for things. It also teaches important life skills like confidence, time management, collaboration and teamwork.

Another important aspect of these programs is peer interaction and relationship building. Through these types of extracurricular activity, children are exposed to other children from different neighbourhoods, communities, and backgrounds to help them gain a sense of perspective and understand different viewpoints.

Where to start

The City offers a wide selection of recreation, library, arts and culture programs. Visit Active Mississauga to filter through a list of activities and programs your child might be interested in. Choose from several activities, such as swimming, storytime at the library, art classes, or sports programs for your little athlete.

You can choose between registered and drop-in programs. Drop-ins are a great way to try many different activities without having to commit to a full season or scheduled session. They are cost-effective (sometimes free), and there are many times and locations to choose from across Mississauga. Registered programs require payment and offer a series of classes. Remember to sign up before activities, classes and programs fill up.

Even though it’s still summer, Fall 2024, Winter and March Break 2025 programs are viewable online on Active Mississauga.

Popular summertime programs

One popular program that is always a hit with parents and kids is the drop-in swims at any one of Mississauga’s indoor and outdoor swimming pools. These drop-in swims allow children to beat the summer heat while learning how to play and enjoy the water safely. When heading out to a pool, parents and guardians should to ensure their child is able to attend and safe when doing so.

Let’s Play in the Park is one of the great free summer drop-in activities across the city. Kids aged 6-12 can enjoy a mix of games, sports, crafts, theme days, and special events right in their local neighbourhood park! Participation is on a first-come, first-serve basis, but it gives youth the chance to try many sports and activities all in one space at one time! If you are looking for another Summer Camp experience before your child goes back to school, there are a few spots available in a variety of summer fun, sports, and swim camps across the city.

So before the summer ends, why not consider getting them to join some great extracurricular activities through the City? The opportunities for your child to learn, grow, and enjoy are endless!
