Honour Mississauga’s heritage during National Indigenous History Month

This June, the City of Mississauga joins the rest of Canada in solidarity to commemorate National Indigenous History Month – a time dedicated to honouring the strength, diversity and heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

Throughout the month, the City is offering programming that highlights and celebrates the contributions and traditions of Indigenous Peoples both past and present. The activities showcase the artistry, storytelling and historical narratives of Indigenous Peoples to help foster a deeper understanding of the integral role they have on our city, province and country.

Programming includes:

• Guided museum tours
• Interactive learning activities at the library, such as:
  • Wampum Belts with Elder Garry Sault
  • Beading with The Indigenous Network
  • Indigenous medicines and ways of well-being with Valarie King
• Book clubs and author talks focused on Indigenous authors
• Moccasin Identifier Project
• Lighting the Clock Tower at City Hall black, yellow, red and white

Mississauga is located on lands which were occupied by numerous Indigenous nations since time immemorial. Settlement and the eventual growth of the City was made possible with the signing of Treaties over 200 years ago. As Mississauga celebrates its 50th anniversary, we acknowledge, celebrate and respect the Indigenous Peoples during National Indigenous History Month, and all year long.
