Hurontario-Main Light Rail Transit Project Receives Full Provincial Funding Promise

City services | April 21, 2015

Today, the Hurontario-Main Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project received a commitment of full provincial funding at the announcement from Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation at the Mississauga City Centre Transit Terminal making it the largest infrastructure project in Mississauga history.

“I am pleased by today’s announcement. The Hurontario LRT will be transformative and move Mississauga forward, allowing us to grow our economy, create jobs, and develop in a way that will keep Mississauga competitive for generations to come,” Mayor Crombie said. “I applaud all Members of Council and the team of professionals from the City of Mississauga, who have worked for years to secure funding for what is the largest infrastructure project in Mississauga history,” Mayor Crombie added.

Today’s announcement calls for the construction of the Hurontario-Main LRT with 26 stops on the 23 km corridor, including stops in the downtown Mississauga City Centre. The provincial government is committing up to $1.6 billion – the estimated cost of the project.

The Hurontario-Main LRT Project is a provincially-planned light rail system, designed by the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton with Metrolinx.

“We can now begin the detailed implementation steps that will take us to the construction of the Hurontario-Main Light Rail Transit Project,” said Janice Baker, City Manager and CAO. “We’ve had great support and dedication from our Council and the environmental assessment was approved by the province last summer. This welcome rapid transit addition will grow our transit network and offer connections to other transit systems.”
