It’s easy being green! Make your holiday season more sustainable

The holiday season is almost here. Make your celebrations more sustainable by reducing waste, buying local and avoiding single-use packaging. Here are some suggestions to help you have an earth-friendly holiday season!

Buy local

Buy gifts from stores that are located near you. You can pick up these items in-store, instead of getting them shipped from further away. This will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with these gifts.

Another great option is to gift an experience instead of a physical item. That way you can enjoy time with your loved ones and reduce potential waste. Check out the top things to see and do in Mississauga.

Set your LED holiday lights on a timer

When purchasing holiday lights look for the Energy Star label. These lights are at least 75 per cent more energy efficient than incandescent lights and last up to 10 times longer, meaning fewer replacements.

Set your holiday lights on a timer so that they aren’t turned on during the daylight hours. By turning your lights on when it’s dark, you can save money on your energy bill by using less energy.

Package up gifts in reusable containers

Receiving a beautifully wrapped gift can be a joyous experience. However, not all gift wrap is recyclable. Consider using a bag or other reusable containers that can be kept and used the next year.

Not sure how to sort your packaging and paper waste after opening gifts? You can review Peel Region’s guide to properly dispose of these items.

Lower your carbon footprint with plant-based food options

Compared to dishes with meat and dairy, plant-based foods have a much smaller carbon footprint. This year, consider adding plant-based food options to your celebrations. By skipping eating meat for one day a week, you can reduce your annual carbon footprint as much as not driving your car for a whole month.

Gift leftovers to family and friends

Make sure to pack up any leftover food in reusable containers and send them home with your holiday guests. This helps reduce any potential food waste and is a thoughtful gift. You can encourage them to reuse the container and bring it back the next time you celebrate together.

Compost your Christmas tree

Did you purchase a live tree for the holiday season? Once the holiday season ends you can compost your tree through Peel Region’s waste pickup services. Make sure to remove all of the ornaments from the tree before leaving it out for pickup.

By following these suggestions, you feel good about being good to the earth while enjoying a merry and bright holiday season!
