Life in Full Bloom: Cherry Blossom Season Takes Over Mississauga

For many, it’s a clear sign of spring when the City’s cherry blossom trees begin to bloom and the sky is speckled with soft pink petals. As the gloomy weather fades, trees around Mississauga, including the beloved cherry blossoms trees at Kariya Park, will start to blossom. Over the next few weeks, city dwellers from across Mississauga will flock to see these beautiful trees bursting with pink and white petals. They are expected to be in full bloom by the end of the month, depending on the weather.

The cherry blossoms are a symbol of spring. They have a celebrated history in Japanese art and culture. Many of the world’s cherry blossom tree varieties come from the Japanese cherry tree (Sakura). These delicate flowers, often soft white, blush pink and dark rose, bloom for just a few days at the start of spring, reaching their full peak in late April into early May. The trees need a minimum of 15 degrees Celsius to fully bloom.

Kariya Park is an ideal place to enjoy some quiet time and soak in the beauty of cherry blossoms. Kariya Park is a beautiful Japanese-inspired park, nestled in the city’s downtown core. It is home to several ornate garden beds, unique Japanese décor, a marsh and pond, rhododendrons, pines, ginkgo, sweetgum, magnolia trees and more than 65 cherry blossom trees of four different varieties. The park honours the City’s Sister City, Kariya, Japan.

In celebration of the City’s 40 years of twinning with Sister City, Kariya Japan, a ceremony focused on the planting of seven new cherry blossom trees will take place in Kariya Park on Wednesday, May 11 at 3 p.m.

Six of the trees were given to the City as an anniversary gift from Kariya while one of the trees was provided by Mississauga-based company, Denso Sales Canada Inc.

All are welcome to join the tree-planting ceremony in celebration of Mississauga’s only Sister City relationship.

The park is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. Paid on-street parking is available adjacent to the park on Kariya Drive, and Municipal Parking Lot #36, located at the south-east corner of Burnhamthorpe Road and Kariya Drive.
