There’s nothing quite like the sensation of being in a pool. The soothing sounds and the comforting embrace of the water around you, and the sense of calm that can elevate your mood and help you relax.
For many, a pool can be a sanctuary, especially those with sensory sensitivities and special needs. Participants can move freely, play without worry or being self-consciousness, and be themselves. The water, allows participants to explore, experience, and have fun, all while developing social interactions, connections and building confidence in a supportive environment.
For the last ten years, the City has offered two pool programs – the Snoezelen pool and sensory-friendly swims – at select community centres for individuals with sensory sensitivities and special needs. These innovative programs offer a unique and inclusive aquatic experience that can help improve physical and mental health, promote relaxation and self-regulation.
Snoezelen pool programs offer benefits for individuals with autism, developmental, behavioural, intellectual disabilities, or those with sensory processing disorders. These programs provide a specially designed aquatic space that incorporates multisensory elements to create a soothing atmosphere – offering a unique opportunity for participants to improve their sensory skills in a supportive and therapeutic setting.
Soft lighting and music and other various features help participants relax and engage with their surroundings. Participants can choose sensations and activities that suit their needs, promoting self-awareness and independence. The City’s Snoezelen pool program offers several benefits for participants, which include:
The Snoezelen pool program does not teach swimming and is not meant to practice swimming. Instead, Snoezelen pool sessions are geared to clients who require a quiet experience. That means all participants must avoid excessive noise, splashing, screaming or refrain from using flippers, snorkels, or swimming pool lengths.
Different from the Snoezelen pool program, the City’s sensory-friendly swims are scheduled sessions at various pools across Mississauga. For sensory-friendly swims, participants can expect reduced noise levels, limited capacity, a quieter setting, and calming music for a relaxed atmosphere. These swim times allow participants to enjoy the pool without experiencing the sensory overload during busy public swims or lessons. During sensory-friendly swims, participants can swim lengths, practice their swimming, and learn new techniques.
These specialized swim sessions typically run on a regular schedule throughout the year, with specific times and locations varying by season. Participants are encouraged to check Active Mississauga for the most up-to-date information on program availability and registration.
As awareness of these programs grows, so does their impact on the community. The Snoezelen pool and sensory-friendly swims create a space where everyone can feel comfortable, accepted, and empowered to explore the joys of aquatic activities regardless of their sensory needs, age or ability, can enjoy being in the water.
The City of Mississauga offers a range of adapted programs for individuals of all ages and abilities in an inclusive environment, which include multi-sport activities, ice skating, visual arts and swimming. One-on-one support is available for children with additional support needs through the Recreation Support Program, which is offered at an additional cost during seasonal camps. These programs are designed with accessibility in mind, allowing participants to engage fully regardless of their differences.

“Our goal is to create a welcoming and accessible environment for everyone to enjoy the benefits of swimming. The Snoezelen pool and sensory-friendly swims are designed to provide a calming and therapeutic experience for those who might find traditional pool settings overwhelming. Programs like these go beyond just providing recreational opportunities – they promote inclusivity, improving physical well-being and mental health while creating a sense of community among participants, especially with children and their families.”
