The City of Mississauga proudly joins the global celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, recognizing the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
Entertainment and activities | March 3, 2025
This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, emphasizes the need to advance gender equality and create opportunities for women to thrive in all aspects of society.
Women make up approximately 43 per cent of all positions at the City of Mississauga. Women in leadership roles make up 47 per cent and can be found in traditionally male-dominated fields such as Fire Services, Engineering, Construction, Security, Parks, Forestry and IT. Mississauga has a strong history of female leadership, with numerous women serving as Councillors and Mayors, including Hazel McCallion (1978–2014), Bonnie Crombie (2014–2024) and Carolyn Parrish (since 2024).
Mississauga remains committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment, supporting women’s initiatives and acknowledging their contributions to the community. To mark this important day, the City has launched a dedicated webpage featuring special events, programs and resources aimed at empowering and celebrating women.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the City’s International Women’s Day activities and support local initiatives dedicated to advancing gender equality.

“This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the extraordinary women who shape Mississauga—leaders, educators, business owners, frontline workers and residents who drive change with courage, determination, and innovation. I’m proud that nearly half of our city’s leadership roles are held by women and that Mississauga continues to stand as a strong advocate for female empowerment, with three consecutive women serving as mayor. This progress is a testament to what’s possible, but it’s also a call to action – accelerating action being this year’s theme. We must continue breaking down barriers and building a future where every woman and girl can thrive without limits.” – Mayor Carolyn Parrish
“I take great pride in being a female leader in our city, where women’s empowerment is at the heart of our community’s growth and success. Today, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of women and reaffirm our commitment to equality and empowerment. International Women’s Day is not just about recognizing progress—it’s about continuing to create opportunities, amplify voices and inspire future generations. When we support and uplift women, we strengthen our entire community.” – Jodi Robillos, Commissioner, Community Services
