Every January, communities across the country come together to celebrate a tradition steeped in history and civic pride – the Mayor’s New Year’s Levee. Over the weekend, Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish and Council Members welcomed residents to the annual levee, celebrating the start of 2025. This event, with its roots tracing back to the opulent courts of 18th-century France, has evolved into a cherished occasion that symbolizes unity, reflection and the promise of a new beginning.
The term “levee” originates from the French word “lever,” meaning “to rise.” It was initially a royal custom where King Louis XIV would receive his subjects in his bedchamber upon waking, marking the start of his day and his readiness to serve the public. This practice was brought to Canada by the Royal Governor of New France, who would greet citizens on New Year’s Day to usher in the new year. The first recorded levee in Canada took place on January 1, 1646, in Quebec, hosted by Charles Huault de Montmagny, the Governor of New France. Over time, this tradition spread throughout Canada, becoming a significant event hosted by various government officials, including the Governor General, lieutenant governors and municipal leaders. In Mississauga, this practice continues to be a vital part of the local culture, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose among residents.
The Mayor’s New Year’s Levee has become a beloved tradition. It offers residents a unique opportunity to meet their local representatives, exchange greetings and foster a sense of community. The levee is typically an open house, featuring live entertainment, refreshments and opportunities for residents to meet and have their photo taken with the Mayor and Members of Council. This tradition not only celebrates the New Year but also reinforces the Mayor’s role in public service and community engagement.
The atmosphere at the January 5 event was vibrant and festive. The levee kicked off at 1 p.m. with a brief ceremony, followed by a meet-and-greet with the Mayor and council members. Revellers enjoyed a variety of family-friendly activities, including face painting and a DJ skate party at Mississauga Celebration Square. The Great Hall, located on the ground floor of City Hall, was filled with music, laughter and conversation as residents mingled with their neighbours, council members and other local dignitaries.
By bringing people together, the levee strengthens civic pride and the bond between the community and local government. It is a time for reflection on the past year and a hopeful look towards the future, embodying the spirit of unity and goodwill that is essential for a thriving community.
