The City of Mississauga learned at an announcement today that it has been selected by the Government of Ontario to host the 2022 Ontario Summer Games (OSG).
“Mississauga is thrilled to once again be selected to host the Ontario Summer Games,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “As Canada’s sixth-largest city, we pride ourselves on our ability to host large-scale sporting events like these. I want to thank the Province for choosing Mississauga. We can’t wait to welcome Ontario’s top athletes, their coaches, families and fans to our great City in 2022.”
“Mississauga is so deserving of this opportunity, as a diverse, welcoming, and energetic city that really embodies Ontario as the world in one province,” said Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. “I want to congratulate them on their successful bid. I can’t wait to celebrate the Games—and our athletes—with them!”
“Having hosted the 2016 Ontario Summer Games and the 2018 Ontario 55+ Summer Games, we are excited to build on those successful events and deliver an even better experience in 2022,” said Shari Lichterman, Director, Recreation. “Our staff and volunteers are ready to work with our host committee and start planning another great event for our community and the visiting athletes.”
City Council has appointed two City representatives to sit on the Host Committee; Councillors Karen Ras, Ward 2 and Matt Mahoney, Ward 8.
“Mississauga is already established as a leader in sport, but the opportunity to host another Ontario Summer Games will allow us to further showcase our world-class facilities and welcome more visitors to our City,” said Councillor Karen Ras, Ward 2 and Host Councillor for the Ontario Summer Games.
Lichterman added, Mississauga continues to deliver on its Sport Tourism Strategy with these successful bids. Next year, the City is home to the 2020 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships and the 2020 Karate Canada Junior National Championships. Mississauga is also hosting the 2021 Ontario Parasport Games.
The 2022 Ontario Summer Games will be held in Mississauga from August 11-14, 2022.
