Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) is proud to announce the successful launch of Next Generation 911 (NG-911), effective today. The NG-911 system will replace the current 911 infrastructure to meet the changing needs of emergency communications and service delivery.
The NG-911 system will replace older analog technology in emergency dispatch centres across the province, and the Joint Fire Communications Centre, that serves Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon at Sir Robert Peel Centre. The upgraded system will allow for improved communications between callers and 911 dispatchers.
While dialling 911 remains the same, there are significant improvements in transitioning to NG-911, such as:
As mandated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), NG-911 is being implemented across Canada. All provinces, municipalities and their Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) are required to meet the NG-911 standards by March 31, 2027. Once implemented, existing 911 systems will be disconnected. Today’s launch marks a significant milestone for MFES as the fire service is two years ahead of CRTC’s deadline to transition to NG-911 by March 31, 2027.
NG-911 is funded, in part, by a transfer payment program from the Government of Ontario, with $208 million being provided province-wide over three years to support emergency services dispatch centres. The province provided $5.2 million for the NG-911 implementation for Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon Fire Services.
MFES joins other emergency responders across Peel Region, like Peel Regional Police, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services as well as Caledon Fire and Emergency Services in implementing the new system.
