City services | January 17, 2024

The City of Mississauga’s transit system, MiWay is proud to announce that two of its employees have received leadership awards from the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA). Stephen Bacchus, a young leader at MiWay, received the Individual Leadership Award in the Young Leaders category, while transit operator Peter Dabrowski received the Individual Leadership Award in the Heroism category.

“MiWay is proud of both Stephen and Peter for their exceptional leadership and dedication to public transit and safety,” said Eve Wiggins, Director, Transit. “Their achievements are a testament to MiWay’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the public transit industry.”

Young Leadership

Bacchus was recognized for his exceptional leadership, initiative, and involvement in advancing public transit. The Young Leaders Award is given to those who have demonstrated a commitment to implementing innovative projects and programs and can positively impact and influence others to learn and grow.

Heroism

In the Heroism category, Dabrowski received recognition for his bravery in saving a teenager’s life. On May 17, 2023, while driving on the Mississauga Transitway, Dabrowski noticed a teenage male in distress outside the concrete guardrail on the south side of the bridge over Eastgate Parkway. He immediately stopped his bus and called Control for assistance. Dabrowski and two passengers rendered assistance, including speaking with a 911 operator while the two bus passengers were able to approach the youth and pull him to safety.

Every year, CUTA presents the Corporate Leadership and Individual Leadership Awards. The awards are presented at its annual conference in the fall.

Background

CUTA supports public transit as the core of integrated mobility across Canada. They do this by providing members with the resources, networking, training, events, data, research and advocacy needed to support their success in the industry.

CUTA’s Corporate Leadership Awards increase positive corporate exposure and prestige by highlighting notable initiatives and advancements made by transit systems and business members. The Individual Leadership Awards recognize transit employees’ and industry advocates’ hard work, dedication and innovation.
