Milder weather means the City’s annual spring maintenance and clean-up work can begin. Residents will see City crews busy filling potholes, performing minor repairs to roadway infrastructure, clearing litter and preparing for street sweeping.
The City’s annual spring maintenance and clean-up program includes:
The City maintains 5,700 lane kilometres of roads, 2,420 kilometres of sidewalks, 51,000 catch basins, 1,000 pedestrian crossings and other infrastructure that residents rely on like multi-use trails and cycling infrastructure. Winter weather can be particularly damaging to infrastructure, resulting in the need for a routine repair this time of year.
Potholes and cracks on roadways typically occur or become more visible in the winter. Freezing and thawing can cause water under the asphalt to expand and contract. While the majority of potholes are fixed throughout the spring, City crews repair potholes year-round when temperatures are warmer and the weather allows for it. Filling potholes regularly is more efficient, cost-effective and helps keep roads in a state of good repair.
This winter season, crews have already used 60 tonnes of asphalt cold patch to fill potholes.

Around mid to late April, weather permitting, the City begins sweeping streets and flushing hard surfaces to clear litter and debris left behind from the winter. Street sweeping prevents pollutants from entering Mississauga’s stormwater system and local waterways.

This time of year, staff will also be working hard to get parks, greenspaces, natural areas and trails ready for the busy spring and summer season. This work includes litter cleanup, preparing plant beds for planting, cleanup of trails and turf areas and preparing and maintaining sports fields for the upcoming season. Parks and Forestry staff will also support spring maintenance crews with trimming trees, hedges and bushes away from roadways and sidewalks. Weather permitting, residents will also begin to see work happening on trees, including burlap removal, minor pruning, replacing tree stakes and reforming mulch saucers.
