Spring storm threatens to bring rain and freezing rain – be prepared, stay safe

A wide-spread weather system is making its way across much of southern Ontario with the potential to bring freezing rainfall.

Environment | March 28, 2025

UPDATE as March 28 at 9:40 a.m.

There is a chance of freezing rain and ice build-up in parts of the GTA this evening, which could lead to power outages, wet and slippery roads and sidewalks, and the potential for broken tree branches. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for Mississauga, with possible ice amounts of 3 to 5 millimetres, starting Friday evening and continuing into Monday.

This type of weather can be difficult to track and can be unpredictable, so it is best to be prepared. Check the weather forecast often if you are planning to travel this weekend.

City crews are actively monitoring road conditions and working to clear road debris and storm drains. Residents are also asked, where safe to do so, to clear storm drains (the square grates on streets) to help prevent flooding and allow for proper water drainage. Report blocked storm drains to 311.

Staying safe

  1. Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, if possible.
  2. If travel is necessary, residents should exercise caution. Stay alert when using our roads whether you’re walking, cycling, taking transit or driving.
  3. Consider delaying your plans for outdoor activities. Changing your plans is much easier than being caught in a situation where your safety, or that of others, is at risk.
  4. If heading outdoors, ensure you are properly dressed in layers, have a source of water and food with you and a fully charged cell phone for emergencies. Also, let a close friend or family member know of your travel plans and route before leaving.
  5. Please stay away from lakes, creeks, rivers, stormwater ponds and lakes, as well culverts.
  6. Please bring pets indoors and remember to call Animal Services at 905-896-5858 if you see an animal that is sick, injured or in distress.
  7. Check your emergency kit to make sure you have everything you need.
  8. Report any downed trees, blocked roadways/sidewalks or safety hazards to 311.
  9. Report power outages in Mississauga to Alectra at 1-833-ALECTRA
(1-833-253-2872) or via X @alectranews. Consider charging your cellphone, have a flashlight on hand and review these emergency preparedness tips.

Please continue to monitor the City of Mississauga Newsroom for updates around this evolving weather event. Check the weather on the Weather Network or the WeatherCAN app from Environment Canada for details on weather conditions.
