The program, launched last fall, has already made an impact by providing a discreet and empowering way for customers with invisible disabilities to communicate their need for extra support, patience, or assistance. Riders who wear the discreet Sunflower lanyard have reported feeling more confident and understood when using MiWay’s services.

Employee training: A key to success

A key element to the program’s success has been MiWay’s commitment to employee training. From recognizing the Sunflower logo to learning how to assist customers with sensitivity and respect, staff have embraced the program’s values. Transit Operators and support staff have been commended for their efforts in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Increased awareness and participation

To date, close to 1,000 Sunflower lanyards have been distributed to MiWay customers through the City Centre Transit Terminal’s Information Booth and Customer Service channels.

Continuing the journey

Building on the program’s early success, MiWay is exploring ways to further integrate accessibility initiatives into its operations. Accessibility is not a destination—it’s an ongoing journey. The positive feedback received reinforces MiWay’s commitment to breaking down barriers and creating a transit system where everyone feels safe, supported, and respected.

With programs like these, MiWay is leading the way in fostering an inclusive, compassionate, and accessible transit network for Mississauga’s diverse community.
