Take a free MiWay shuttle to Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services’ open house!

This October, remember to test your smoke alarms and join us for exciting fire prevention demonstrations and activities!

On Friday, October 11, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) invites families for a free barbeque and an open house to launch Fire Prevention Week. The open house will include activities that the whole family can enjoy and participate in. Last year’s event was a massive success as MFES welcomed thousands of visitors across all ages.

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 6 to 12, 2024. This year’s theme is Smoke alarms: Make them work for you! MFES is focused on educating as many residents as possible about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. Last year, MFES participated in the first Test Your Smoke Alarm Day and participated in the Saved by the Beep campaign again this year.  Additionally, the City has a dedicated web page for fire prevention and fire safety at home.

In Ontario, in 2022, there were 133 fire-related fatalities – the most in 20 years. In many of these deaths, smoke alarms were not working. The message is clear: working smoke alarms save lives.

Event details

What:

The open house is a free event with many educational and fun activities planned for all ages, such as:

• A live fire and smoke demonstration in our burn cells, performed by trained staff. The audience will witness a side-by-side burn to demonstrate how much time people have to escape a home if they have a working smoke alarm versus no working smoke alarm.
• Free barbeque and coffee.
• Explore the inside of a variety of vehicles, including fire trucks.
• Children’s activities and free giveaways.
• Booths with demonstrations and displays.

When:

Free parking for the event is at Meadowvale GO Station – there is no parking at the open house event. Parking is only available at Garry W. Morden Centre for people with limited mobility or medical conditions.

This year’s complimentary shuttle service helps MFES accommodate all visitors without turning families away from an important public safety related event.

Get directions for the complimentary MiWay shuttle bus. There will be signage and balloons at Meadowvale GO station that will help identify the waiting area where people can gather with their families and wait for their bus.

Bus Schedule:

• 9:50 to 10:30 a.m. – Buses travel from Meadowvale GO Station to Garry W. Morden Centre on a fill and go schedule
• 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Buses operate every 15 minutes from Meadowvale GO Station
• 12:30 to 2:15 p.m. – Buses travel from Garry W. Morden Centre to Meadowvale GO Station on a fill and go schedule
• 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. – Final buses depart from Garry W. Morden Centre.

Event Schedule:

• 9:50 a.m. – Bus departures begin from Meadowvale GO Station; shuttles run all day
• 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Enjoy fun activities
• 11:30 a.m. – Barbeque (while supplies last)
• Noon – Remarks by City leaders
• After 12 p.m. – Live demonstration
• 2:30 p.m. – Last bus departs from Garry W. Morden Centre

*This event is a rain or shine, half-day event for families to attend.

Show up to Meadowvale GO station (as seen below) or arrange to be dropped off at Garry W. Morden Centre.

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, Peel Police and the Department of National Defence are confirmed to attend.
