Your new fur-ever friend is waiting for you at the Mississauga Animal Services shelter

Have you been thinking about welcoming a new pet into your home? Mississauga Animal Services has many pets including, dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and guinea pigs, available for adoption.

Adopting a pet

If you are 18 years or older, you can adopt a pet from the Mississauga Animal Services Shelter. Adopting a shelter pet can be a rewarding opportunity for everyone, including the pet who gets the comfort and security of a permanent home.

The Animal Services Shelter is open to the public and residents do not need to book an appointment to visit or for adoption. However, there may be short wait times to view the animals.

What’s included

• Dogs and cats are spayed/neutered or have reduced spay/neuter fees
• Dogs and cats receive a first-year licence
• Dogs and cats come with a microchip implant, are dewormed and have received their first set of vaccinations (excluding rabies)

Foster a pet

If you’re unsure, consider becoming a foster parent volunteer to care for a pet for a short time until they are ready for adoption. Fostering a pet is the perfect way to learn and care for a pet without making a long-term commitment. Additionally, you help to make a pet more adoptable by giving it another chance to find a happy home.

Licence your pet

If you own a pet dog or cat in Mississauga, it must be licensed as per the Animal Care and Control By-law. A pet licence is your pet’s identification and must be visible on your pet’s collar. It contains vital information about your pet to help Mississauga Animal Services return your pet if it goes missing. The fees associated with pet licences help support the Animal Services Shelter and rescue sick or injured domestic animals and wildlife.

Consider Home-to-Home

If you haven’t found the pet you’re looking for in the City’s Animal Services Shelter, try finding pets that are waiting to be rehomed. Furthermore, if you have a pet that you can no longer care for, be a responsible pet owner and help provide them with a temporary foster home or a new permanent home.

Report neglect or cruelty

To report animal neglect or cruelty cases, please call the Ontario Animal Protection Call Centre at 1-833-926-4625. Violating these laws can result in sentences such as two years of jail time, fines up to $130,000 as an individual and a lifetime ban on pet ownership, among others.
