Scheduled park closure for controlled burn

Jack Darling Memorial Park (including the leash-free area) will be closed to the public before and during a controlled burn that will take place sometime between mid-March and early May. The burn date will be confirmed 24 to 48 hours in advance.

Explore Jack Darling’s waterfront, picnic areas, tennis courts, leash free zone, and native tallgrass prairie. Bring the kids to the spray pad in the summer or the toboggan hill in the winter.

Trails

A paved portion of the Waterfront Trail crosses through the park. You can also access walking trails in Rattray Marsh Conservation Area.

Beach

The beach at Jack Darling Memorial Park is unsupervised and open on a daily basis, pending water quality results. You can check the Peel Region’s water quality results for the beach before you visit.

Tallgrass prairie

Jack Darling Memorial Park features a tallgrass prairie that’s home to many rare species and pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. It needs periodic fire to help regenerate prairie grasses and remove invasive woody plants.

Every few years, the City conducts controlled burns in early spring, when prairie grasses are dormant, to maintain the health of the prairie ecosystem. The prairie at Jack Darling Memorial Park had its last controlled burn in April 2021. The next burn will take place in spring 2025.
