MiWay is pleased to secure over $123 million in federal government funding to enhance transit service, improve reliability, and support climate change resiliency. This investment will help grow Mississauga’s transit system, making service more frequent, reliable, and accessible for all customers.
The Canada Public Transit Fund has committed $112 million over 10 years (2026–2036) to upgrade, replace, and modernize Mississauga’s transit infrastructure while maintaining a state of good repair. These investments will improve transit accessibility, reduce overcrowding, and create a more efficient system that better connects people to jobs, services, and their communities. Additionally, this funding will support the development of complete, transit-oriented neighborhoods, helping increase housing supply and affordability while contributing to the fight against climate change.
The Zero Emissions Transit Fund will contribute up to $10.9 million toward the purchase of hydrogen fuel cell buses, which produce only water and warm air instead of harmful emissions. The funding will also support the installation of hydrogen fueling infrastructure at the Malton Bus Depot, making transit operations greener and more sustainable.
Through the hydrogen fuel-cell electric bus pilot, Mississauga will become the first municipality in Ontario to showcase the commercial and technical viability of powering public transit with locally produced green hydrogen.
These investments are a major step forward for public transit in Mississauga. They will allow MiWay to improve service frequency and reliability, reduce emissions, and create a more sustainable and connected community. A stronger transit system means better service that connects people to destinations and a more livable city for everyone—making Mississauga a great place to live, work, and play.
