Background and funding
In January 2021, it was announced that the City of Mississauga would receive $113.5 million in federal and provincial funding for transit infrastructure through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).
The funding will support 12 public transit projects in Mississauga that will help improve transit infrastructure. Of these 12 projects, seven are On-Street Transit Infrastructure Projects.
Projects
1. Enhanced bus stop amenities on major roads
Construction timeline: Fall 2021 to Fall 2027
Enhanced bus shelters will be installed at key intersections along MiWay’s express corridors on:
- Derry Road
- Dixie Road
- Erin Mills Parkway
- Eglinton Avenue
The shelters will be larger, accessible, heated, and include screens with digital schedules.
2. Installation of on-street bus shelters
Construction timeline: Spring 2021 to Fall 2027
New standard bus shelters will be installed at existing bus stops throughout the City.
3. Enhanced bus shelters
Construction timeline: Fall 2021 to Fall 2026
Enhanced bus shelters will be installed at four of MiWay’s existing terminals and stations, located at:
- Laird Road at Vega Boulevard
- Meadowvale Town Centre
- Erin Mills Town Centre
- Dixie Outlet Mall
The bus shelters will be larger, accessible, heated, and include screens with digital schedules.
4. Construction and restoration of bus stop pads
Construction timeline: Spring 2021 to Fall 2022
New and restored bus stop pads will be built to improve safety and accessibility at locations throughout the City.
5. Replacement of bus stop signs with new accessible design
Construction timeline: Summer 2021 to Fall 2027
Existing (Mississauga Transit) bus stop signs will be replaced with a new (MiWay) accessible design.
6. Enhanced customer partitions on the Mississauga Transitway
Construction timeline: Fall 2021 to Fall 2027
Glass partitions will be installed at Mississauga Transitway Stations for customer safety.
7. Transit terminal upgrades
Construction timeline: Spring 2021 to Fall 2027
These upgrades will include:
- Installation of station identification pylon signs at the City Centre Transit Terminal and Westwood Mall Transit Terminal
- Application of red plastic treatment for bus only lanes and bus bays throughout the City
