About the project
The program will support improved energy efficiency and decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It will help homeowners finance energy retrofits by:
- Providing information on different ways to improve energy efficiency
- Making low-interest loans available to homeowners
- Helping homeowners navigate the retrofit process through different channels, including online platforms
The regional approach including all three municipalities provides synergies that allow for saved time and money. It will also provide consistency for retrofit professionals working across Peel Region.
Once established, the program will towards:
- Improved efficiency of residential energy use
- Reduced GHG emissions from the single-family residential sector
- Increased savings by reducing resident energy demand
- Fewer barriers for homeowners to upgrade their homes
- Support local jobs and economic benefit

Frequently asked questions
The residential energy efficiency program can help residents save money on utility bills. For example, based on the average utility bill for homeowners in Ontario, a 30% gain in efficiency would result in annual savings of over $600. These savings will only grow as the price of natural gas and electricity increases over time.
In addition, retrofitting existing buildings will help us to reach our GHG emission reduction targets.
This program is funded by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to design a program for single-family homes only.
The City is continuing to look for more opportunities to retrofit all types of buildings as it is critical to reaching our GHG emission reduction targets.
