Submit final Retail Strategy
Overview
Retail and commercial spaces on our main streets and plazas serve nearby residents and are important for employment, economic activity and cultural expression.
Despite the important role of retail space, it’s challenged by:
- Online shopping
- Changing demographics
- Local development pressures to build housing
- Impact of the pandemic on consumer preferences and behaviours
We also need to make sure retail space is adequately maintained and protected as we build up existing neighbourhoods.
The Retail Strategy will address these challenges and help inform our Economic Development Strategy and other City policies.
Summary of work
This is a city-wide study with a special focus on areas where there is major growth, like the downtown, growth centres and growth nodes, the Hurontario LRT corridor and other important retail clusters.
It will be broken into 2 phases.
Phase 1 work
Phase 1 of the study is research intensive and includes the preparation of 4 distinct background reports:
- Land Use Analysis
- Market and Community Analysis
- Assessment of Current Context, Benchmarking and Market Feasibility
- Stakeholder Consultation
Phase 2 work
Phase 2 of this study will build on the work of Phase 1 to deliver a Retail Strategy and Implementation Plan. The City will use the plan as a road map to make sure there’s a healthy and vibrant retail offering in Mississauga.
