Completed in 2021 City project

Uptown Node character area Official Plan Amendment

The City prepared an Official Plan Amendment (OPA) to guide and manage growth in the Uptown Node area. This area is centred around the intersection of Hurontario Street and Eglinton Avenue.

About

The Uptown Node is centred on the intersection of Hurontario Street and Eglinton Avenue. The area is experiencing great change with a soon-to-be built Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) stop and many new mixed-use buildings on the horizon. It is projected that the population of the Uptown Node could increase from 12,300 to 30,000 people based on current and upcoming development activity.

With this project, the City developed policies to guide and manage growth in the Uptown Node character area. This was approached through an Official Plan Amendment (OPA), to bring about a healthy, connected and complete community that can meet the needs of people that live, work and play there.

To ensure that the Uptown Node can grow into a sustainable and vibrant community, the OPA:

  • Established an urban, fine-grain road network
  • Secured land for parks and playgrounds
  • Retained retail and office functions
  • Encouraged a range and mix of housing choices
