In progress City project

Vision Zero

Vision Zero is the internationally endorsed long-term goal of zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. In 2018, Mississauga officially became a Vision Zero City.

Vision Zero commitment

In 2018, the City of Mississauga officially committed to Vision Zero through a Council-approved motion. That means city staff and elected officials are working toward a goal of Zero fatalities and serious injuries from collisions on city streets.

What is Vision Zero?

The Vision Zero approach acknowledges that people make mistakes and that the transportation system needs to be designed and operated in a way that mitigates the negative impacts of human error. To do this, the Vision Zero approach relies on data-driven decision making to provide a safe and equitable transportation network that protects all users, with specific emphasis on the most vulnerable users of our roads like pedestrians and cyclists.

Getting to Vision Zero

In February 2018, the Region of Peel adopted Vision Zero and published its Road Safety Strategic Plan. That same year, Mississauga also passed a resolution to adopt Vision Zero. In May 2019, City Council approved the Transportation Master Plan to guide the future of the City’s transportation system in a way that advances the goals of Vision Zero. Following this, Mississauga further committed to delivering on Vision Zero through the creation of a dedicated Vision Zero Program Lead, and in 2021 our Vision Zero Action Plan was published. Implementation of both the Transportation Master Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan is currently underway.
