Naturalize your yard

Planting native plants helps wildlife, requires less water and care, and helps Mississauga prepare for climate change. Naturalized yards provide habitat for both plants and animals, which creates a healthy and diverse ecosystem.

What a naturalized yard looks like

A naturalized yard:

  • Has at least five native plant species that support pollination
  • Has native plants that cover a minimum of 75% of the naturalized area
  • Is free of harmful or invasive plants
  • Is pesticide and herbicide free

Naturalized yard recognition program

Register your naturalized yard with the Mississauga Nature Steward at Home program, which recognizes and celebrates stewardship on private property.

Staff will review the photographs you provide during registration or may visit your yard to confirm it meets the criteria. If your yard qualifies, we’ll let you know and you’ll get a free yard sign to recognize your stewardship.

You can register by filling out the online form.
