Getting involved in city planning is important because planning affects everyone.
Some public consultation is required by law, while other engagement helps planners test ideas. It’s your role to get involved and represent your interests.
Public feedback will not change the outcome of a proposed development if the development aligns with policy. But your feedback is still an important tool that planners use to consider and determine how we’ll grow in the future.
We work on studies and policies that guide how and where future growth should happen. Public feedback helps make sure they reflect the vision and values of the community and the public interest.
Consultation activities can include surveys, in-person and virtual meetings, open houses, workshops, focus groups, interactive online tools and other special events. They can happen at different phases of a project, like the beginning or when draft documents are ready.
Development applications requesting changes to the City’s Official Plan and Zoning By-law can impact the overall look of a development, how it fits within existing space or what the land is used for.
We are legally required to gather public feedback on these types of applications. A statutory public meeting is held by the Planning and Development Committee. Sometimes meetings are held by Councillors before a planning application is submitted to gather the initial thoughts about a proposal from the community.
Public notices about the application and statutory meeting are mailed to neighbours within 120 metres of the proposed work.
We recommend whether development applications should be approved or refused at Planning and Development Committee meetings. Outcomes of City-led projects or plans are also presented at these meetings.
You can attend these meetings to ask questions or comment. To speak at a meeting, email deputations.presentations@mississauga.ca prior to the meeting date.
If you can’t attend a meeting, you can send your comments to application.info@mississauga.ca or to:

The Committee of Adjustment considers Minor Variance applications where a proposed development meets the general intent of the Official Plan and Zoning By-law and only varies slightly from zoning rules.
The Committee also considers Consent requests for small-scale land division.
Public notices about these applications and statutory meetings are mailed to neighbours within 60 metres of the proposed work.
If you would like to submit comments on an application, or register to participate in an electronic hearing, email committee.adjustment@mississauga.ca.
