In a crisis, do you jump in to help? Do you thrive in a team environment? Are you interested in continuous learning and personal development? Are you motivated by serving the community? If so, firefighting might be the career for you.

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) is looking for firefighter recruits to join its fire service, working to protect people, property and the environment in Mississauga. Interested applicants can apply at jobs.mississauga.ca until Monday, April 21, 2025.

A day in the life

Firefighters at Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) work around the clock to keep the community safe. Unlike a typical Monday-to-Friday job, firefighters operate on a rotating shift schedule that ensures fire stations are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – including weekends and holidays.

Each firefighter works 24-hour shifts – they are on duty for a full day before getting time off. Their schedule follows an averaged 42-hour workweek over a 28-day cycle, which balances long shifts with built-in rest days. This system ensures firefighters are well-rested while maintaining continuous emergency response coverage for the city.

So, whether it’s a weekday, a weekend, or a holiday, there are always firefighters on duty – ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

In addition to fire suppression, MFES firefighters also respond to high-risk emergencies, medical calls, vehicle collisions, confined space rescue, trench rescue, rope rescue, ice and water rescues, and emergencies caused by exposure to hazardous materials.

Firefighters also engage with the community at public events and to promote fire safety to the community.

Benefits of becoming a Mississauga firefighter

Successful MFES recruits receive a competitive salary, vacation days, health benefits, and a rewarding pension plan. Recruits will train at Garry W. Morden Centre, a state-of-the-art training facility located in Mississauga. During training and on the job, recruits will have many resources and leaders to learn from. Most importantly, MFES provides an environment where firefighters are well trained and can make the most of their careers by growing into various roles.

In recent years, MFES has also invested in public safety by building new fire stations including the City’s first-ever net-zero fire station, acquiring specialized trucks, hosting training demonstrations, implementing NG 911 and earning the highest grade in Ontario in fire safety.

You could be the next MFES firefighter

In addition to having the technical skills and physical abilities, MFES encourages those from all professional backgrounds to consider a career in the fire service. MFES is committed to providing an environment where firefighters can be their authentic selves and share their life experiences.
